David Jensen: Lovin’ life in CaptivaPosted on: 2007-08-17By ALIYA BALAHMAR
The Jensen family has made a great name for themselves on Captiva.
David Jensen, his brothers, and sister are proud owners of Jensen’s Twin Palm Resort and Marina, as well as Jensen’s on the Gulf which have received national recognition in the New York Times and many other well known publications.
Jensen has been active in the community through the many Captiva organizations. He is a Captiva Erosion Prevention District commissioner and a member of the Captiva Community Panel.
Jensen has lived in Captiva for 25 years. “I am orginally from Michigan and that is where I lived before moving to Captiva,” said Jensen. “I co-manage Jensen’s Twin Palm Resort and Marina and Jensen’s on the Gulf with my brothers and sister. When I lived in Michigan, I did construction work.”
Jensen decided to move to Captiva when his parents purchased the Twin Palm Resort and Marina. He was given the opportunity to work at the marina.
Jensen claims that he was “pushed” into joining the Captiva organizations by his father but he never regreted it. “I had been asked to consider being a CEPD commisioner and he insisted that I accept,” said Jensen. “I’m glad I followed his direction. My experience with the CEPD made it an easy decision to be part of the Captiva Community Panel; as I have now learned that volunteering within my own community, one that I love very much, is highly rewarded.”
Jensen’s expectations and accomplishments for the panel are both one and the same. “My expectations for the panel is to continue to provide an opportunity and place for Captiva residents and property owners to voice their concerns about the future of Captiva as it relates to planning,” said Jensen. “Also, to maintain our positive relationship with Lee County.”
Jensen’s expectations for the CEPD is to seek and receive funding for future beach maintenance and renourishment projects. Jensen’s view on the CEPD’s accomplishments are shared by all Captivans. “For the CEPD, taking care of the beach so we don’t have to drive through ’Tween Waters to get to the north end of the island,” said Jensen.
As for his accomplishments regarding the panel and the CEPD, “I consider both organizations as teams and myself a team player,” said Jensen. “If Captivans view the CEPD and the panel as having accomplishments worth noting, I’ll take partial credit. I am not the one to judge.”
When asked what his likes and dislikes were, “As long as Victor Mayeron (owner of the Mucky Duck) continues to share his humorous stories with me everything will be fine and dislikes will not enter my thoughts,” answered Jensen.
Jensen hopes that islanders continue their volunteering efforts and support for the islands’ organizations such as the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation and People United to Restore our Rivers and Estuaries. “As for Captiva, my crystal ball has always been cloudy and this makes life exciting,” said Jensen about his dreams for Captiva.
Jensen also hopes to spend time with his girlfriend, Queenie, of Queenie’s Ice Cream, visiting Italy. His next career move doesn’t entail anything but to enjoy running the businesses his mother and father passed on to him and his siblings.
Surely Captivans consider Dave Jensen to be one of the most cheerful and happiest of personalities on the island. His love for the island shows in almost all aspects of his life. “I get all covered in goose bumps thinking of all the laughs I have shared with people from all over the world because I happen to work at Jensen’s Twin Palm Marina,” said Jensen. “Whoa! What neighbors! What visitors! What customers! What an island! Would someone please pinch me?”
